“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. – Hippocrates.
We could all do with a little more ‘me time’ in our lives, yet we rarely make time for ourselves on a ‘to-do list’. When we are constantly giving to others and we forget about our own need for fun, connection and self-expression, we can feel all over the place! Studies suggest that overlooking our own wellbeing can lead to us feeling exhausted and resentful, taking a huge toll on our health. This can often make us feel stressed out, suck the enjoyment out of our lives and make us increasingly negative.
Research shows that when we practice ‘self-care’ we have more energy, joy and confidence to function. Self-care is all about making time to recharge our batteries, feel good about ourselves and keep us inspired in our everyday life. Do what you can to find balance and be proactive about the areas of your life you may be neglecting. To assist your journey, here are some aspects of self-care to consider with some ideas to get you started;
- Emotional – Express yourself and enjoy quality friendships (show appreciation for the people around you).
- Psychological – Set some limits on technology (iPhone and T.V) and take time to process your feelings.
- Physical – Look after your body by eating healthfully (fresh fruits and vegetables), exercising regularly and getting enough rest (7-9 hours of sleep a night).
- Spiritual – Make time for inspiration, play and reflection.
- Workplace – When we live mindfully by practicing a work/life balance this shows kids how to live a well rounded healthy life with fun and relaxation playing an essential part. 🙂
